Lawyer Well-Being and the Law Firm Culture: “On Being a Happy, Healthy, and Ethical Member of an Unhappy, Unhealthy, and Unethical Profession”

LAW member Julie Sandine and Michael Holder will discuss the law review article by Judge Patrick J. Schiltz, “On Being a Happy, Healthy, and Ethical Member of an Unhappy, Unhealthy, and Unethical Profession,” as well as related topics regarding lawyer well-being and the effect on a lawyer’s ethical duties. Although Judge Schiltz wrote the article in 1999, the issues discussed are still relevant today. Members of the legal profession experience higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression than the rest of the population. These issues appear to stem from the law firm culture.

The first half of the discussion will focus on why lawyers are unhappy and how a lawyer’s well-being can implicate ethical obligations. In contrast, the second half will discuss how to remedy these issues and the millennials’ outlook on job satisfaction that could potentially change the landscape of law firm culture.
