Celebration of Women Heroes and How You Can Help Shape Our Community
Heroes selflessly serve others by making a positive impact in people’s lives and in our community. They rise above barriers and challenges to effect change. This program will highlight several women who have impacted our community through their ambitious efforts and determination. We will share the successes of these women and how they passionately work to make our community an even better place to live. During this program, you will learn how to run a judicial campaign; how to create a 501(c)(3) organization; and how to successfully operate the 501(c)(3) after creation.
The First Hour: Brief introduction of women heroes and the many forms that takes.
- Jackie Dixon*, Brenda Dowdle* and Mary Walker* for A Step Ahead;
- Jude White*, Assistant Commissioner for Child Care and Community Services at the TN Department of Human Services;
- Julie Sandine, Founding Secretary of Mindfulness in Law Society;
- Joycelyn Stevenson*, Executive Director of TBA;
- Bettie Kirkland, Executive Director of Project Return;
- Ashonti Davis*, Counsel at Aetna;
- Derri Smith, Founder of End Slavery TN;
- Edin Murrie, COO and Martha Boyd, Board of Directors of Operation Stand Down;
- Ana Escobar, General Sessions Judge.
These heroes will speak approximately 5 minutes each describing their organization and community impact and how to get involved. *Denotes past president of LAW.

The Second Hour:
How to Run a Judicial Campaign - Courtney Wheeler, Partner at Bruns Wheeler Group Consulting. Courtney spent the past 20 years working at various stages of electoral and political campaigns. From managing successful Tennessee State House races to working in multiple roles of Presidential Campaigns, she brings a diverse set of skillsets to any campaign, non-profit, or business.
How to Create a 501(c)(3) Organization - David Mayer, Bass Berry & Sims. David has experience in the creation and administration of various business entities, including 501(c)(3) organizations.
How to Successfully Operate the 501(c)(3) After Creation - Dawn Deaner, Choosing Justice Initiative. Dawn is the Founder and Execurtive Director of the Choosing Justice Initiative. Before launching CJI in November 2018, Dawn spent 10 years as the Metropolitan Public Defender for Nashville-Davidson County, Tennessee, and 11 years before that as an Assistant Public Defender in Nashville.
