Member Meeting and CLE: Parole Advocacy in Practice: A Hands-On Training for LAW’s Parole Assistance Project

Following the powerful conversations at LAW’s Second Chances CLE, this training moves from awareness to action. If you missed the December 10th event, here is your chance to get involved in this project or simply to learn more! Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from Angie Bergman and Ben Raybin. Lunch and parking are compliments of Bass Berry & Sims! CLE credit is on LAW!
Parole Advocacy in Practice is a hands-on CLE designed to prepare attorneys to work directly with incarcerated individuals as they prepare for parole hearings before the Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole. No criminal defense experience is required.
This program will walk participants through the nuts and bolts of parole advocacy, including:
- How parole hearings work in Tennessee
- What the Board looks for when making release decisions
- How to review parole files and institutional records
- Preparing effective release plans and written submissions
- Helping incarcerated individuals develop and present their narrative
- What attorneys can—and cannot—do in parole proceedings
Participants will hear from experienced parole advocates, Angie Bergman and Ben Raybin and receive practical tools, sample materials, and guidance they can use immediately when working with parole candidates.
This training is intended for attorneys interested in volunteering with LAW’s Parole Assistance Project, which pairs lawyers and law students to assist women in Tennessee prisons who are approaching parole eligibility. The training will ensure volunteers are equipped to provide meaningful, ethical, and effective assistance in a process where preparation can make a critical difference.
Who Should Attend:
- Attorneys of any practice background
- Lawyers interested in pro bono or access-to-justice work
- LAW members seeking practical volunteer training
