BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE
In 2011, the Lawyers’ Association for Women – Marion Griffin Chapter (LAW), along with several other women's legal entities and bar foundations, received a cy pres award from a pharmacy class action settlement. Beth Alexander, LAW member and prevailing attorney on the case from the law firm of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, secured funds in the settlement agreement to be distributed to LAW "for the general benefit of and advancement of women." Donna Roberts, Laura Baker, and Abby Sparks, subsequent LAW Presidents, established LAW committees to explore and determine the most effective use of the funds. LAW President Nikki Smith-Bartley continued the progress of the Symposium by selecting the Symposium Chairs.
In 2015, the Board of Directors formally approved the creation of the Marion Griffin Women's Symposium with the purpose of advancing and educating women in the legal profession within Nashville's legal community. The biennial Symposium will provide a unique collaborative forum with networking opportunities for Symposium attendees, inclusive of local women lawyers, judges, law faculty, and law students. The Symposium will feature a luncheon with a keynote speaker followed by a series of breakout sessions and panel discussions addressing current legal and societal issues impacting women. Continuing Legal Education credit will also be available.
