30th Anniversary

On February 23, 2011, LAW celebrated thirty years of memories, lessons learned, and progress with a program and reception at the Bound’ry.  LAW members and guests, including many of the forty-five original founding members, gathered at the Bound’ry to celebrate this occasion.  Attendees enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and cocktails while being entertained by fellow LAW member Linda Rose and her band, Rose on Vibes & Jazz Co.  Members revisited LAW events from years past with a photo montage and copies of old newsletters from the LAW archives.

Current LAW president Donna Roberts paid tribute to the founding members of LAW in a speech that highlighted the changes in the organization, the legal profession, and opportunities for women.  Members and guests were then treated to a video presentation featuring twelve of LAW’s founding members telling stories about the formation of LAW, including stories about crock pots of overturned chili, meetings in the basement of the City Club, and the decision to include men as members in LAW.

The founding members in the video also recalled moments in which they faced challenges, including stories of law professors who were less than supportive of women law students and judges who refused to allow women dressed in pants in the courtroom.  The founding members offered words of wisdom to younger generations of attorneys and discussed ways in which LAW remains relevant 30 years after its inception.   As founding member Barbara Moss said, “We need the voice of women to be heard.  And if LAW can give you some training in coming forward with your voice, then it’s totally relevant to what we need in our world today.”

We honor and thank the forty-five founding members of LAW for their vision and continued commitment to women.
